Where Should Noise, Vibration & Dust Monitoring Equipment Be Positioned on Site?

The technically appropriate position is usually specified for the project. Making it work — and keeping it working for eighteen months on a live construction site — is a separate and very practical problem.

Start with the position specified for the project

Where specialist judgement is required, monitoring and receptor positions are specified by the competent project team or its appointed specialist. That decision draws on the receptors around the site, the project's approach and criteria, and any requirements from the local authority — and it is not a decision to reverse-engineer from what happens to be convenient on site.

So the practical question is rarely "where should this go?" in the abstract. It is: given the position specified for this project, what will it take to install something there that survives, stays powered, keeps reporting and can be reached safely for the next year?

Physical security

Construction sites are hard on equipment. A position that is technically ideal and physically exposed will be damaged, moved or lost. Practical considerations:

  • Inside the site boundary or otherwise protected where possible
  • Away from plant movements, turning areas, haul routes and material stockpiles
  • Clear of reversing areas and anywhere a banksman would rather not have an obstacle
  • Cabinets and enclosures fixed and lockable, with cabling protected or routed out of reach
  • Not somewhere convenient to lean a board, a length of rebar or a full skip against

Mounting and exposure

Mounting decides whether the position holds for the duration. Noise positions need clean microphone exposure and weather protection; dust instrument inlets need the exposure the equipment is designed for; vibration sensors need mechanical contact that does not drift.

  • Poles and posts — the usual answer, provided they are properly founded or clamped
  • Hoarding and fencing — quick, but hoardings get moved and rebuilt during a project
  • Scaffold — solid while it exists; scaffold comes down on somebody else's programme
  • Cabinets and ground-fixed enclosures where the position needs to survive a long deployment
  • Building fabric and structures — only with permission, and with care where the fabric is sensitive
  • Vibration sensors mounted or coupled to the surface being recorded, and checked for consistency

Power: mains, battery or solar

Power is one of the common reasons a monitoring position stops reporting. It is worth being pessimistic at the planning stage.

  • Mains where available — confirm the supply is not isolated at the end of a shift or on a temporary board due to be removed
  • Batteries with a realistic exchange interval, planned for the worst part of the year rather than the best
  • Solar where there is genuine unshaded sky, allowing for winter yield and for buildings, cranes, trees and hoardings that will shade it later
  • Cable runs protected, routed sensibly and not crossing a route plant will use

Communications, SIM and antenna

A position that cannot communicate is a position somebody has to visit. Signal is extremely local on a construction site — metalwork, concrete cores, deep excavations and new structures all change it.

  • Cellular signal checked at the actual position, not at the site gate
  • Network and SIM choice suited to the coverage actually available
  • Antenna placement clear of metalwork, cabinets and structures that will attenuate it
  • Basement, deep excavation, tunnel and heavily screened positions identified early so an alternative can be arranged
  • Reporting confirmed working end-to-end before the visit is closed out

Weather, exposure and disturbance

Enclosures need to cope with driving rain, sustained wind and temperature swings, and cable glands need to be made off properly rather than optimistically. Beyond weather, the main risk is simply other people's work: a position beside a cutting operation, a wash-down area, a fuel bowser or a busy pedestrian route is going to be disturbed sooner or later.

Safe access for maintenance

Many long-term positions will need attending at some point — for example for battery exchange, a communications fault, consumables or a functional check. If a position can only be reached from a MEWP, over a live excavation or through an area that will be handed over to another trade, that access requirement needs to be understood before installation, not discovered when the position drops offline.

Plan for the works moving

Construction sites are not static, and a monitoring position installed for a long programme may eventually be affected by changing site arrangements or work fronts.

  • Where the works are heading over the coming months, not just where they are now
  • Hoarding lines, gates and boundary changes already planned
  • Scaffold erection and dismantling programmes
  • Excavations, level changes and new site roads
  • Whether the position will need relocating, and roughly when
  • Whether safe access will still exist once site arrangements change

Where a position has to move, it is relocated, recommissioned and re-recorded with updated photographs and geolocation so the record stays accurate.

Commissioning before leaving site

The visit is not finished when the equipment is fixed to the pole. It is finished when somebody has confirmed it is recording and reporting:

  • Functional check that the equipment is recording and reporting
  • Confirmation the position is powered and communicating before leaving site
  • Photographs of the installed position and its surroundings
  • Geolocation recorded for the position
  • Installation details noted so the next attending engineer is not starting from scratch
