Vibration Monitoring Near Heritage & Sensitive Buildings

Works close to older, listed or otherwise sensitive structures often bring a vibration monitoring requirement. The criteria and the interpretation belong to the project's specialist; keeping reliable positions running on and around a building that cannot be casually drilled into is the field problem.

Why these projects involve monitoring

Older masonry, listed buildings, historic fabric, party structures and occupied neighbouring properties all attract attention when heavy construction activity starts nearby. Monitoring gives the project a live record of vibration at agreed positions while the activity is happening, which is when a working method can still be adjusted.

Typical activities behind a requirement:

  • Demolition, including structures adjoining or close to buildings that are staying
  • Piling and ground improvement works
  • Excavation, breaking out and deep groundworks
  • Road breaking, compaction and heavy plant movements
  • Structural alterations, underpinning and works adjacent to party structures

Ground vibration and building vibration, in simple terms

Ground vibration monitoring

A sensor coupled to the ground or a ground-bearing surface, recording vibration travelling through the ground from the activity — piling, breaking, excavation, demolition, compaction. Often placed between the source and the structure of concern.

Monitoring on or at a building

A sensor mounted on the structure itself — commonly at or near ground level on a wall or structural element — recording vibration response at that measurement location on the structure, rather than at a separate ground position nearby. Some projects use both, in which case any comparison between them is a matter for the appointed competent specialist.

Class 1 is a classification for acoustic instrumentation and does not apply to vibration equipment; vibration systems are specified on their own measurement characteristics.

Mounting and coupling on sensitive fabric

This is where heritage work differs most from an ordinary site. The mounting has to be mechanically sound enough to give consistent data and acceptable to whoever is responsible for the fabric.

  • Sensor mounting or coupling appropriate to the surface being recorded — ground, slab, wall or structural element
  • Fixing methods agreed with the building owner or duty holder where the fabric is sensitive, listed or historic
  • Non-invasive or reversible fixings where the fabric cannot take drilling
  • Coupling checked so the sensor is genuinely in contact and stays that way for the duration
  • Consistent orientation and position recorded at installation

Permission is not a formality. Arrangements for fixing to a listed or historic structure need to be agreed with the building owner or duty holder before the visit, and it is worth having a fallback method identified in case the preferred fixing is refused on the day.

Protection, access, power and communications

Many of these positions sit at a boundary, on private property, or in an occupied building — which makes attendance harder than on an open site.

  • Physical protection from plant, site traffic and ongoing works
  • Enclosures and cabling secured against disturbance and weather
  • Access arranged in advance where the position is on private, occupied or restricted property
  • Power planned realistically — mains, battery exchange intervals or solar where the position allows
  • Cellular communications and antenna placement proven at the position
  • System health checks so an offline position is caught rather than discovered in a report
  • Fault attendance to bring a position back into service

Where access depends on a resident, a facilities team or a heritage body, every visit has to be planned rather than improvised. That is a strong argument for getting power and communications right at installation instead of relying on frequent attendance — maintenance and fault response is a great deal easier when the position was deployed properly in the first place.

Alerts, reporting, relocation and recovery

  • Alerts against the criteria supplied for the project, to the nominated recipients
  • Scheduled reporting for the agreed monitoring period
  • Factual field records of attendance, faults and interventions
  • Relocation as the work front moves, with the new position commissioned and checked
  • Updated geolocation and photographs whenever a position changes
  • Recovery of equipment and field infrastructure at completion, with the position left tidy

Demolition and piling programmes move, and positions that made sense at the start of the works often do not by the middle of them. Relocation is normal; what matters is that each move is commissioned, documented and reflected in the reporting so the record remains traceable to a known position.
