What BS 5228 broadly covers
BS 5228 is the British Standard concerned with noise and vibration control on construction and open sites. Part 1 deals with construction and open-site noise, while Part 2 deals with construction and open-site vibration. It is widely referenced by project teams, acoustic specialists and local authorities when a project's approach to noise and vibration is being set.

How monitoring can form part of a project approach
Where a project approach references BS 5228, monitoring often appears as the means of demonstrating what actually happened during the noisier or more vibration-generating phases: piling, breaking, demolition, earthworks, out-of-hours activity or work close to occupied buildings.
In practice that usually means a small number of continuously reporting positions, configured to the arrangements supplied for the project, with alerts to nominated people and scheduled reports for the record. Noise and vibration are different jobs in the field
Noise positions
A noise position is about the acoustic environment at a point: the microphone needs clean exposure, weather protection, height away from casual interference, and a mounting that will not move. It is usually placed with reference to the receptors the project is concerned about. Where instrumentation grade is specified, NVD uses genuine Class 1 sound level instrumentation conforming to the latest applicable IEC 61672-1 / BS EN 61672-1 requirements.
Vibration positions
A vibration position is about mechanical contact. The sensor has to be mounted or coupled to the surface it is meant to be recording — ground, slab, wall or structural element — in a way that stays consistent for the duration. A vibration sensor that has worked loose can compromise the validity or representativeness of the recorded data, so secure and consistent coupling matters. Class 1 is an acoustic instrumentation classification and does not apply to vibration equipment.
What the project defines, and what NVD delivers
Normally set by the project team or its appointed specialist:
- Which positions are monitored, and whether they cover noise, vibration or both
- The measurement parameters and averaging arrangements required
- Any criteria, trigger levels or action levels that apply
- The activities and programme phases the monitoring is intended to cover
- Who receives alerts, and how quickly
- Reporting format, frequency and recipients
- How long positions stay in place, and when they move

Continuity is where most projects lose data
The hardest part of a long monitoring programme is not the installation, it is the months afterwards. Power gets isolated, a battery cannot keep up in December, a SIM reaches its limit, an antenna gets buried behind new hoarding, a position ends up inside the next excavation.
System health monitoring, fault attendance and planned battery or communications intervention are what keep a record continuous. When the work front moves, positions are relocated, recommissioned and re-recorded with updated photographs and geolocation so the reporting stays honest about where the data came from.
Working with the appointed specialist
Assessment, methodology, criteria and interpretation of results against BS 5228 or any other project reference remain with the client's appointed competent specialist where specialist technical judgement is required.
